Platinum, the importance of decent dogfood for outdoor dogs

Platinum dog food review
Firstly let me explain the reason why I wrote this dog food article, it isn’t paid content and I can say that everything I've written (like everything we write) is true, honest and a real reflection of our experience.

Why did I want to write this article on dog food? Because I realised how important it was to our family and the TentLife experience that our dogs were really getting the nutrition that was keeping them healthy happy and loving life.

When I first approached Platinum and told them I wanted to write the article, I chatted with Roman and I think he could tell how passionate I was about his dog food.

DOGGOS
Our story below explains how much we value this dog food and what it is doing for our furry TentLife team members. They are super healthy, always full of life, important family members, let me introduce Elsie and George!

We’ve been using Platinum dog food for 18 months (UPDATE - much longer now) now and if you follow us on social media you know these doggos have walked (run) the 96 mile West Highland Way, trotted along the Tissington and Monsal trails (whilst we cycled) in the Peak District and accompanied us along sea and sand of the south coast. I could go on, but you get the point.

The original Elsie and George names were grandparents to Mrs TentLife. They played a very big part in her upbringing and so we named our dogs (both girls) after them. We got Elsie first, she is a Beagle from show lines with prize winning parents. She is the snob of the group. Then there is George (Georgina) who is a Sprocker. George is not a snob, she is the scruff of the bunch.

Elsie and George both contributed to us finding Platinum dog food in slightly different ways and here are their brief stories.

Elsie Beagle;
Elsies contribution was due to a typical Beagle trait called stubbornness. The princess decided that if she fancied something different to eat, like a sausage or something else equally tasty, she would just stop eating.

Her stubborn streak meant she wouldn’t eat for days on end, resulting in us a responsible owners, getting her something different to try. However every time she got bored of the food, the pattern would repeat itself.

Platinum dog food is the only one Elsie has loved consistently since the first day it was delivered to our house. She always eats all of her food and never leaves it.

Sprocker George;
George is a bit more of a sorry tale, but Platinum helped us get there in the end. As you read already, Elsie is stubborn and in typical beagle fashion would like to wander off during a walk and refuse to come back, even when called.

We decided to get a playmate for her, as they would be more likely to stick together and it would most likely help us with the problem of Beagle recall (it did).

When we collected George from her seller, she was the only one of the litter remaining. Mom and dad were not about and she looked very sorrowful indeed and to be honest, in need of rescuing. She was a tiny brown cute bundle and we really didn’t want to leave her behind.

The seller provided us with a large bin bag full of dodgy looking dog food that we refused to feed her on. We purchased some better, moist food, but something was wrong with her digestion as her poo’s were never solid. She always ate her food really quickly (still does to this day), and so we concluded that she was probably the smallest of the litter (runt) and hadn’t been very well looked after.

So we had a Beagle who would refuse to eat and a little brown food hoover (sprocket George) with a constantly bad tummy and very messy poos. These two adorable critters were the reason we tried many many premium pet foods before Platinum dog food answered our prayers.

Platinum dry dog food.
After trying more different brands of dry dog food than we care to remember, we came across Platinum dog food whilst searching online. We read all about the ingredients and manufacturing process on their website. Also, as the chicken flavour was wheat/gluten free, had a high meat content and no GMO ingredients we were happy to give it a try.

Our order was placed and we’ve never looked back. It’s continues to be a brilliant food for our mischievous pair. Although it’s a dry dog food, the biscuits are moist because they use a manufacturing process where the meat juices are absorbed back into them. 18% moisture content makes for a rather tasty food and our two doggos love it – No I haven’t tried it.

George and Elsie are in perfect health, the vets say they are both the ideal weight, healthy glossy coats and with plenty of energy. We know about the energy thing as we’ve tested them loads. Healthy teeth, healthy bones and healthy poo’s, what more could anyone ask for :o)

The Platinum.co.uk website is a wealth of information and certainly worth your time taking a look around. It provides you with lots of other information about their foods, their moisture content and much more.

George is a very happy doggo, she still eats her food really fast and always will. We’ve even got her a special swirly bowl to slow her down a little but she’s figured out how to get around that.

Most importantly though is that this food really agrees with her sensitive tummy. She has no longer has any problems with her digestion and her poos are now always firm (hooray).

Happiness but at what cost?
Every few months we buy 15kg of the Platinum chicken dry dog food, and it arrives really fast in a cardboard box containing 3 x 5kg vacuum sealed bags. With our first order, they sent us a measuring cup and a plastic clip for sealing the opened bags back up.

I calculated that it costs 86 pence to feed our dogs each day. That’s not 86 pence each, that’s in total. At the time of writing, 15kg of their chicken food cost £49 delivered and it lasts us almost 2 months. I recon that’s money well spent for two very healthy, energetic and happy pooches.

You may say that it’s not cheap, but for us it wasn’t just about cost and it really never should be.

Space saving;
Another advantage we’ve found when using this dog food is when we are camping and taking day trips. For the right nutrition, you only require a small measured amount and this definitely saves space.

Anyone who backpacks or goes family camping knows there is always never enough space for everything, so not having to transport tons of dog food is a big help. We just pop a measuring cup full of Platinum chicken into an old bread bag (we like to recycle) and is the perfect amount for their active day.

Happy, Healthy and Active.
18 months later (much longer now), we have no intention of changing our dogs food as it's perfect for both of them.

Your dog isn’t just a pet, they are a companion and this is even more true if you and your 4 legged friend are in love with camping, hiking and generally love the outdoors.

The story of where we got to the food we give our dogs is not an uncommon one. There are plenty of dog lovers out there who may benefit from reading about our experience with Platinum dog food and we hope you found this article interesting and helpful.

From Elsie and George it comes VERY highly recommended xx
