This campsite was the setting for our TentLife Romantic Getaway featuring the beautiful Vango Rosewood. It was our wedding anniversary so we wanted something special.
Coastally set to the west of Snowdonia National Park in Gwynedd, North Wales, this campsite had been recommended to us by a number of members of our Facebook TentLife group.
We had been testing out a cheap solar power setup, and because we had some juice for the essentials we were able to have a better pick of the pitches. We were given large pitch number 28 right on the sea front, and the view was beautiful.
Like most of our campsite reviews, we try and build a picture of what it would be like not only to stay there but what activities and places you can visit during your stay. So to that end, lets just right in.
Just before we start, we had to pass through Bala (an historic market town in the Snowdonia National Park). We have camped at Bala before at Glanlynn campsite and during our stay we found and fell in love with the award winning T.J.Roberts butchers. As Mrs TentLife love T-Bone steak we popped in a grabbed a couple of huge succulent pieces for our anniversary meal (very reasonable priced).

About Aberafon campsite.
Blink and you will miss the entrance to this campsite. It’s a nice secluded site and you will approach it coming along the A499, as there is no other way to it. We used our TomTom satnav and it got us there without any hickups at all.
The Murco fuel station is along the A499, less than a mile away and has a Londis shop, and just over a mile in the other direction is a very little village called Trefor with a Premier store. We popped in here to get some beers when we first arrived.
The first thing you will pass when you drive onto the site is the shower and toilet block. It’s the only shower block on the site and it takes 20p pieces for 3 minutes. There are other toilet blocks around but these are the only showers, a bit of a walk but for the location and the beach it’s worth it.
Next stop along the road is the main building and reception with a small shop for essentials. We booked in, got our pitch number, map and were pointed in the general direction. The reception also have 20 pence pieces to give out for the showers, so we grabbed a few and were on our way. Opposite the reception house, was a barn type building that housed a games room complete with lots of kids activities as we all a pool table. Right next door was a laundry room with coin operated washer and also a chest freezer for refreezing your ice packs.
There was a convenient toilet block not too far from our pitch, with washing up facilities for your plates and dishes right next to it with lovely hot water.
We located our pitch and proceeded to set up the Vango Rosewood tent. The weather was nice, the pitch was a good size and we only had one neighbour in a small Trespass tent.

For our evening meal we had curry for tea which had made at home and brought along with us. This meant that we could just set up the tent, and heat up the curry with very little effort. Oh, and we sprinkled some water on naan breads and warmed them on the CampingGaz party grill to accompany the curry.
We then went and had a cosy fire on beach, and with our full stomachs we sat listening to the sea lapping on the shore and looking up at the stars – and of course we drank some beers.
FRIDAY
The weather was dull with a little bit of rain but was still warm. The dogs really enjoyed their early morning run along the beach, they are allowed to be off their leads whilst on the sand and they couldn’t get enough of it.
We had a bacon and egg sandwich for breakfast with a filter coffee.
Because the weather wasn’t the best, we decided to go for a drive, We drove to Caernarfon to the Morrison’s for a few bits and bobs. It’s a straight road, taking about 20 minutes.
We also stopped in at McDonalds for a cheeky Toffee Sundae.
Today was our wedding anniversary so we were having a lazy day (unlike us), and when we returned to the campsite, we set up the fairy lights inside and outside the tent for our romantic evening meal.
Needless to say, the rib-eye steaks, potatoes, mushrooms and salad were thoroughly enjoyed and all washed down with a nice bottle of red wine – Thank you Mrs TentLife.
SATURDAY
8am and the dogs needed to go out and we had the entire beach to ourselves again.
It was brighter weather today with a warm breeze and the sun threatening to make an appearance. Turns out someone had attached a 17 foot canoe to the roof of our van, so as it would have been rude not to use it we decided to go for a paddle on Llyn Padarn and have a little picnic. Click here to read about our canoeing, picnic and how we turned a midge head net into coffee filter bags.
SUNDAY
Today we visited Beddgelert, parking on the nearby car park – We had a full breakfast at one of the cafes followed by a cheeky ice cream ready for our walk up Moel Hebog mountain (783m elevation). We have written about this separately, our use of hydration packs, trusty Mammut boots, managing to break one of my walking poles and being late for our evening reservation at the pub.
Our evening meal was at the Saracans Head in Beddgelert. I had booked in advance but we were late, so we must thank the wonderful staff for squeezing us in. The food was lovely with very generous portions, I had fish and chips, and Mrs TentLIfe had minted lamb burger. They even have a menu for dogs, so they were catered for too.
MONDAY
Pizza for breakfast, yes really – It was one of the only things left in the cool box. So we cooked it whilst packing the tent away. It was rather tasty as the Party Grill had crisped the base up lovely.
We often like to stop of somewhere on our return journey for a walk or a waterfall. This occasion was no different and we visited Aber Falls in the village of Abergwyngregyn. We have again written about this separately and it is well worth visiting.
We really enjoyed our stay at Aberafon campsite, the sea view was wonderful, even though the weather could have been a little brighter. The doggos loved the quiet beach in the mornings, and we enjoyed falling asleep to the sound of the waves and having fires on the beach.
